This is the first post on my new blog. I’m just getting this new blog going, so stay tuned for more. Subscribe below to get notified when I post new updates.
I haven’t been able to write much recently due to a lot of external factors in my life but i came across these pictures and wanted to share them. Recovery is never easy and it might never fully happen but with small steps you can make progress. If you need help with your recovery reach out to me especially in these difficult and unpredictable times we are all living in. Together we’ve got this! 💚
When I have had bad mental health days or have felt anxious or nervous in the past, I used to just let it win as I didn’t know how to deal with it or what I was supposed to do to ease it or make it go away, so I suffered and struggled through until it got so bad that I needed help.
After getting help I now have techniques and ways of dealing with my feelings of stress, anxiety and for the days when I am feeling more depressed than usual.
Everyone has their own ways of dealing with their problems and not all techniques work for everyone so it’s key to try different ideas and see what works best for you.
First of all listening to music can be a great way to relieve stress and lift your mood. I also enjoy going out for walks with my dogs or on my own and have learnt to tune into what is going on around me, sounds of wildlife, traffic or leaves rustling are all normal sounds to hear but can go by without you even realising until you be present in the moment and hear them so try it next time you’re out and see if you notice the difference. Exercise as everyone knows releases the “happy hormone” so lifts the mood and also tires you out so it definitely helps with sleep!
This leads me to a big technique that has helped me: Mindfulness – Being mindful and in the present moment has helped me so much recently, with the use of Apps such as Calm and Headspace I have been able to use my breathing as a way of grounding myself and being in the moment when I am feeling stressed or anxious. They have also helped massively at night time when I have been struggling to sleep, they relax me and I’ve had some of the best sleeps I’ve had in a long while. These apps can be downloaded onto your phone and used any time, they do have subscriptions but using it over a year it works out to be a very cheap option and the amount of help I have gained from using them has been priceless!
Another technique that I have found to be particularly useful is CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) I got referred to this by my GP and after using the programme I have learnt new ways to deal with my problems, how to break down my way of thinking and change it. It’s quite a big topic so I think I’ll do a post for it on it’s own so look out for that!
Self-care is also key to lifting your mood, reducing stress, anxiety and depression. Spending time doing things that you love, asking for help when you need it, putting yourself first, saying no and setting boundaries are all important steps you can take to have good mental health.
These are the techniques I have been using, if I find anymore I’ll add them and I’d also like to hear what techniques you use so let me know! I hope you try out one or more of these ideas and they help you get better mental health!
Hi I’m Laura and this is my blog about Mental Health.
I have lived with depression and anxiety for most of my life, I’ve known more days with feelings of depression and anxiety than days without these feelings. When I finally get a good day it feels likes it’s over in a flash and I maybe didn’t appreciate it as much as I should have as the next day can be like crashing back down to earth. As each day passes and as I get older I have started to learn to appreciate the good days and moments a lot more especially on my bad days because the reality is that without the bad times we go through, we can’t fully appreciate the good times so if I was to give anyone a piece of advice it would be to enjoy when things are great even if it is just for a few moments in a day because you never know when the tide will turn.
Living with depression and anxiety I believe is something that I’ll always have, it might not be every single day in my life that I feel depressed or anxious but through my experiences it’s something that I always have to work through especially in times of what I call ‘flare ups’ when times get really tough and it feels like things will never get better. After having it for so long I know that it can get better and that’s always one of my main focuses. No matter how bad things get, each second that passes is another second I’ve survived, those seconds turn into minutes, hours, days, weeks and years and no matter what you or I do, time doesn’t stand still so if I end up spend that time worrying or I use a coping technique, the second, minute etc will pass either way. Once I realised this it made it easier to focus, however that doesn’t mean that I never spend time overthinking, worrying, anxious and having panic attacks – all of those things still happen unfortunately but after seeking help after these occurrences continued to happen I now have ways of dealing with them and coping with life day to day. I’ll share these coping techniques and strategies in the next few posts and I hope they can help you as well.
I don’t want to ramble on and bore anyone so I’ll keep this fairly short but if I have helped you from reading this right now then that’s fantastic and that is my goal – to be able to help others to open up and talk and to make Mental Health a subject people talk about ‘normally’ rather than all the negativity that surrounds it.
